I used to have a charity project called Leave a Mark, where myself and a fellow book blogger hosted auctions to benefit the charity First Book. In 2008 and 2009 combined, we earned a total of $1587.50. That equals out to over 700 books for kids in need through the charity First Book.
The items we auctioned were marked up books by authors and other famous names. The authors marked up one of their own titles, and the other famous folks marked up a favorite book.
What does “marking up” mean? It’s like an annotated version of the book for an author – write little notes and facts throughout the book that the future winner/reader might be interested in knowing! If the book is not your own, you simply post your thoughts about parts of the book – highlight favorite quotes, etc.
I think with the idea of marking up a book in mind, it’s easy to see why the auctions are called Leave a Mark. It also works because the money raised by these auctions are going to help a charity and that will leave a mark on whoever the charity helps.
I had the idea in mind that I needed to work with one set charity, like I did in the past, but I have decided that I am going to focus on “seasons.” I’ll choose a new charity every few months so all money raised during those three months will go to a certain charity and then the charity changes for the next three months. So on and so forth.
